The error of King Rehoboam, the son of King Solomon, began with his refusal to listen to wise counsel. He forsook the counsel of elders of Israel but chose to follow the counsel of his corrupt friends. The ungodly counsel from his friends ruined his reign over all Israel.
Don't let your position overwhelm you to make you ignore the request of people below you. Make yourself available to others in the spirit of good relationship building. John Maxwell said, "Leadership cannot be separated from relationship" King Rehoboam was high-minded and therefore ignored the people's request for better condition of living in Israel.
Know that listening helps you to digest what others have said. It provides you with the platform to project your leadership with a difference as someone who could read the needs, feelings and expectations of people. If you want to build good lasting relationship, part of what is required of you is to actively listen to others. It is a proof that you are either caring or not. May your ears be opened to wise counsels and may your ears be attentive to understand and discern the needs of people in Jesus name.
