WHEN PURPOSE IS MERCHANDIZED FOR A POTTAGE

Jacob answered, Then sell me today your birthright (the rights of a firstborn)…Then Jacob gave Esau bread and stew of lentils, and he ate and drank and rose up and went his way. Thus Esau scorned his birthright as beneath his notice.
- Gen 25:31,34

It amounts to a loss of magnificent proportion for a man to trade off his purpose in exchange for a pottage. It isn’t something to shout about when a man tramples his purpose under his feet in exchange for material possessions and inordinate affection. It is nothing short of ingratitude and foolishness for a man to squash his purpose just to meet a seemingly pressing need that will end his life in depression. The purpose of God for your life is God’s master-plan for your life to make you a masterpiece that will get you in the spotlight. Therefore, anyone who merchandizes God’s purpose for his life on the grounds of gratifying the flesh will have to stock his life with the merchandise of shame, regret and depression.

If you don’t know who you are, you will certainly answer to the description of any trait that the world attributes to you. However, the knowledge of your personality helps you to place a high premium on your self-worth. With that, you won’t grant audience to anyone who wants to monetize and merchandize your purpose exchange for self-gratification. Many have fallen into the trap of allurement and are reaping the harvest of sorrow. Their hunger for pleasure has made them to sacrifice the mandate of God for your life on the altar of promiscuity, idolatry and fame.

Esau thought that it was a wise deal to exchange his birthright for a pottage. He took a dim view of his birthright. Without exercising sound judgment and discretion, he considered his birthright as a marketable item and was willing to offer it in exchange for any mundane package. Had he known that his birthright was the master key that will connect him to unlimited prosperity, he could have shot down the proposal made by Jacob requesting him to sell his birthright. Esau disdained God’s purpose for his life and was denied access to reap the manifold blessings of God for his life. In the end, he was left to make do with crumps and had to scrape the bottom of the barrel while he would have had running over blessings. Therefore, may you never have reason to make a merchandize of God’s purpose for your life in exchange for temporal gains and gratification in Jesus name.
