THE HARVEST OF COURAGE

If we say, ‘Let us enter the city,’ the famine is in the city, and we shall die there. And if we sit here, we die also. So now come, let us go over to the camp of the Syrians. If they spare our lives we shall live, and if they kill us we shall but die.” – 2 Kings 7:4

People who prefer to stay on the sidelines while others are pulling their weight never come anywhere near the corridors of success. When you decide to allow the fear of failure to grease the skids for your indecision about major events in your life, you would be doing yourself a disservice. You need courage to put up a brave front when you are confronted with challenges that exceed your human intellect. And when playing it safe takes your destiny a step backwards, then it will be profitable to advance forward and stand up against oppositions that may want to disrupt your advancement.

In 2 Kings 7:4, the four lepers at the border of Syria were mixed up as regards the right course of action to take. When the city of Samaria was struck with famine, the lepers were scavenging for food to keep body and soul together. So when they arrived the border of the Syrians, who were a enemy nation, the lepers were torn between returning to Samaria and die of starvation or encroaching upon the camp of the Syrians, for possible survival. In the spirit of courage, they took a bold step to encroach upon the territory of the Syrians and put their lives on the line. While they cowered with fear as they inched along into the camp of the Syrians, the Lord God was with them to make them change agents.

Interestingly, while the four lepers hit the city of Syrians, the Lord God made the host of Syria to hear the noise of war. So the Syrians fled from the city and left behind their possessions. Because the Syrians had deserted all their possessions coupled with food items, the four lepers had enough food to eat and to spare. They brought good tidings to the city of Samaria, notifying the king of Samaria of the abundant supply in Syria. Through them the Lord God turned the tide for the city of Samaria; the famine in the land was turned around and the city experienced elegant sufficiency. Hence, without the inspired courage of the four lepers, the land of Samaria would have been extremely worse off.
